It is not the first, will not be the last, name change that is. Alphasniffer (Boulder) has announced a new corporate identity, introducing…BiOptix. This modification in moniker echoes how the Colorado life science ecosystem is certainly maturing from a research and discovery engine to the logical progression of more of a commercialization focus, this second corporate name change announced in 2008 validates our regions evolution.

Bill Freytag, Ph.D. Appointed AlphaSniffer Board Chair
What do you get when combing Colorado-based Nobel Laureate technology (Dr. John Hall, 2005-Physics) with Colorado-based All-Star management (Dr. Bill Freytag, Chair & CEO Aspreva Pharma, Chair & CEO Myogen)? Answer…alphsniffer…who announced the appointment of Dr. J. William Freytag as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors. Congratulations to Founder and CEO Misha Plam, Ph.D. for assembling such an outstanding team around an outstanding platform technology.
To say Dr. Freytag has been busy these last few years would be an understatement. Read more about his value creating ways (here). In addition to his current work with AlphaSniffer Dr. Freytag is also serving on the Board of Directors for Sierra Neuropharmaceuticals, ARCA Discovery and Immunicon (NASDAQ: IMMC), and brings particular expertise in the filed of diagnostics having formerly served as President of Molecular Diagnostics at Boehringer Mannheim (acquired by Roche).
AlphaSniffer continues to make incredible progress having already established proof-of-concept with their proprietary technology for real-time, sensitive, label-free detection of medically and commercially important molecules such as DNA, proteins, toxins, contaminants and other molecules. Sniffing Out Cardiac Attack and Bird Flu
AlphaSniffer has developed a highly-sensitive biosensor for detection of trace amounts (~pg/mm2) of bacteria, viruses, proteins, nucleic acids, antibodies and other biological and chemical agents in real-time and with minimal human intervention. Recently they were awarded a $200,000 SBIR grant by the NIH to develop its compact, label free, sensitive and rel-time platform that is capable of multiplex detection of biomarkers and pathogens using glycan microarrays. In addition AlphaSniffer received a $100,000 NSF grant to develop the platform for use as a cardiac diagnostic instrument.
Congratulations to Dr. Misha Plam, CEO and the entire AlphaSniffer team on these awards! Good luck as they accelerate development in the point of care rapid detection of impending cardiac attack and troponin and myoglobin measurements, as well as the glycan array technology to detect bird flu.

AlphaSniffer: Detecting It All…
AlphaSnifer, developer of highly sensitive biosensors for the detection of trace amounts (~pg/mm^2) of bacteria, viruses, proteins, nucleic acids, antibodies and other biological and chemical agents, in real time, announced they received U.S. Patent #7,233,396, “Polarization based interferometric detector”.
In addition, as Dr. Misha Plam, President and CEO of AlphaSniffer, gears up to raise a Series A financing two key additions to the companies advisory board were made, they include Dr. Bill Freytag (Chair and CEO of Aspreva Pharma) and William Marshall (EVP of Dharmacon). The company has raised approximately $2.7M in angel and SBIR grants to date.

AlphaSniffer Launches New Look
AlphaSniffer, LLC (Boulder) was founded in 2003 by Dr. Misha Plam. AlphaSniffer has developed a highly-sensitive biosensor for the detection of trace amounts (picograms) of bacteria, viruses, proteins, nucleic acids, antibodies and other biological and chemical agents in real-time and with minimal human intervention. Dr. Plam is the former founder, CEO, President and Chairman of the Board of Sievers Instruments. Sievers successfully exited to Ionics (now GE) for $21M. AlphaSniffer through SBIR grants and angels has raised approximately $2.7M and intends to focus efforts upon a series A financing.
